Reverse DNS Mismatch on ImprovMX MX Servers
Understanding why DNS checkers may flag a reverse DNS warning.
When checking DNS records for ImprovMX's mail servers, you may encounter a warning about reverse DNS (PTR record) not matching the SMTP banner. This guide explains why this occurs and why it's not a concern.
The Warning
DNS checker tools may flag that the reverse DNS doesn't align with the SMTP banner displayed by mx1.improvmx.com or mx2.improvmx.com. This warning typically appears as:
"Reverse DNS mismatch: The PTR record does not match the server hostname"
Why This Occurs
The ImprovMX hosts mx1.improvmx.com and mx2.improvmx.com serve as inbound MX servers. Their purpose is to:
- Receive incoming mail destined for your domain
- Forward that mail to your configured destination addresses
These servers are designed to receive and forward mail, not transmit outbound messages on behalf of your domain.
Why This Doesn't Affect Deliverability
Outbound delivery from ImprovMX uses separate sending infrastructure with properly configured reverse DNS. The warning you see applies only to the inbound-receiving servers, which have no impact on whether your messages get delivered.
Key Point: Reverse DNS matching is important for outbound mail servers. For inbound MX servers that only receive mail, this warning is harmless.
What You Should Do
You can safely ignore this warning. It is a normal condition for inbound-only mail infrastructure and does not affect email deliverability in either direction.
