POP3

Post Office Protocol version 3

POP3, or Post Office Protocol version 3, is an email protocol used for downloading emails from a server to a single device, allowing you to read them offline.

Key Differences from IMAP

The protocol differs significantly from IMAP. While IMAP maintains emails on servers and syncs across devices, POP3 downloads messages and typically removes them from the server afterward. This means emails become accessible only on the device where they were downloaded.

Use Cases

POP3 works best for users who:

  • Access email from a single device
  • Want to reduce server storage consumption

Limitations

POP3 offers less flexibility than IMAP since it does not synchronize email status (read/unread, flagged status) across multiple devices.

Recommendation: IMAP is a better option for most use cases due to its superior multi-device management capabilities.

ImprovMX is a forwarding service and does not provide POP3 access. Use your destination provider's POP3 settings if needed.
