Microsoft Outlook SMTP
ImprovMX SMTP compatibility with Microsoft Outlook.
This guide explains why ImprovMX's SMTP service cannot be used with Microsoft Outlook and provides an alternative solution.
The Incompatibility
Unfortunately, Outlook does not allow sending and receiving accounts to be configured separately. This creates a fundamental architectural conflict with ImprovMX.
How ImprovMX Works
- ImprovMX provides standard SMTP for outgoing messages
- ImprovMX only forwards incoming emails to existing inboxes (no traditional mailbox)
How Outlook Works
Outlook expects the SMTP server to be linked to the same provider as the incoming mail server. This mismatch makes the two services incompatible.
Why This Matters
ImprovMX's design philosophy separates sending and receiving infrastructure, which provides flexibility for users who want to:
- Forward emails to any existing inbox (Gmail, Yahoo, etc.)
- Send from their custom domain via SMTP
Outlook's requirement for a unified provider prevents this decoupled approach from working.
Recommended Alternative
We recommend Mozilla Thunderbird as a compatible desktop email client. Thunderbird allows independent configuration of sending and receiving accounts, making it fully compatible with ImprovMX's setup requirements.
See our Thunderbird SMTP setup guide for detailed configuration instructions.
Other Options
If you prefer to use a web-based email client, consider using Gmail with ImprovMX SMTP, which supports separate sending configurations through the "Send mail as" feature.
