IMAP
Internet Message Access Protocol
IMAP, or Internet Message Access Protocol, is a standard email protocol used to retrieve emails from a mail server.
Key Characteristics
The protocol enables several important features:
- Server-based storage: Messages remain on the server rather than being downloaded to a single device
- Multi-device access: Users can check email from phones, laptops, tablets, or other devices
- Synchronization: Email status stays current across all devices in real time
- Server-side management: Users can organize, delete, or mark messages as read directly on the server
Comparison to POP3
IMAP differs significantly from POP3. While POP3 typically downloads and may remove emails from the server, making them accessible from only one device unless specifically configured otherwise, IMAP maintains server-based access patterns that enable seamless multi-device email management.
Note: ImprovMX is an email forwarding service, not an IMAP provider. We forward emails to your existing IMAP-capable inbox (Gmail, Outlook, etc.).
