Gmail SMTP Setup
Send from your custom domain using Gmail and ImprovMX SMTP.
This guide enables you to send emails from custom domains directly within Gmail using ImprovMX SMTP, combining the convenience of Gmail's interface with personalized domain addresses.
Prerequisites
- A paid ImprovMX subscription (SMTP is a paid feature)
- Completed SMTP credential creation in the ImprovMX Dashboard
- DKIM and DMARC records configured in DNS
Note: These instructions apply to personal Gmail accounts. Google Workspace results may vary.
Step 1: Create Email Alias in Gmail
- Open Gmail settings (cogwheel icon)
- Navigate to See all Settings → Accounts and Import
- Under Send mail as, select Add another email address
Configuration Details
- Email address: Your custom alias created in ImprovMX
- Treat as an alias: Leave unchecked
- SMTP server:
smtp.improvmx.com - Port:
587 - Username: Your custom alias address
- Password: Your ImprovMX SMTP credential password
- Security: TLS encryption
Step 2: Confirm Alias
Check the forwarding destination inbox for Gmail's verification email. Complete verification by clicking the link or entering the provided confirmation code.
Step 3: Test Functionality
- Compose a new message in Gmail
- Select your custom alias in the From field
- Send to an external recipient (not the forwarding address)
- Verify successful delivery in the recipient's inbox
Adding Multiple Aliases
You can add multiple aliases by repeating these steps. The setup enables sending from custom domains while maintaining Gmail's native interface and features.
Setting as Default
To send from your custom domain by default, click make default next to the address in Gmail's Accounts and Import settings.
