ImprovMX, IMAP, POP, and Incoming Protocols

Understanding why ImprovMX doesn't provide IMAP or POP3 access.

ImprovMX functions as a forwarding and sending service rather than a mail hosting provider. ImprovMX doesn't host mail, it only forwards and sends it. Thus, there are no applicable incoming protocols (IMAP, POP, etc.) to be used with ImprovMX.

Mail Client Authentication Issues

When configuring mail clients to send from custom domain aliases, clients often require incoming mail settings. There are two approaches to handle this:

  • Use fake or invalid incoming credentials — Since mail won't be delivered to the alias anyway, these settings don't need to be valid
  • Use your destination address settings — For example, if myalias@mydomain.com forwards to mygmail@gmail.com, use Gmail's IMAP/POP settings

Send-Mail-Only Alternatives

For scenarios where standard configuration doesn't work, alternative "send mail only" address setups exist. These are sometimes called:

  • External SMTP addresses
  • "Send mail as" features
  • Outgoing-only accounts
Note: Compatibility varies by mail client. Apple Mail, for instance, has limited support without workarounds.
